In 1989, changes to Canadian patent law introduced a new patent numbering system. Patent applications files on or after October 1, 1989 were assigned serial numbers starting from 2,000,001. The application number is retained for the published (laid-open) application and issued patent, with the addition of kind codes A and C as shown below.
