In 1824, the Legislature of Lower Canada (Quebec) enacted the first patent law in British North America. The first patent law in Upper Canada (Ontario) was passed in 1826. Other Canadian provinces followed suit in the 1820s and 1830s. Patents issued in Upper Canada are designated the 1st series. Following Canadian confederation in 1867 and the passage of the first federal patent law in 1868, provinces stopped issuing patents.
